Past Perfect

The Past Perfect tense talks about an action in the past that happened before another action in the past.

 

Past Perfect Form:

had + past participle

 

For example:

  Example sentence What it means...

Past simple

When I got to class, the teacher took attendance.

First, I got to class. Then, the teacher took attendance.

Past perfect

When I got to class, the teacher had taken attendance.

First, the teacher took attendance. Then, I got to class.
