Passives

Passives

Passives are used when the focus is on the action. The person doing the action is not important, not known, or is obvious. The passive voice is often used in news headlines.

 

The Passive Form:

Present

are

Past

was

were

Present Perfect

has been

have been

Future

will

 

For example:

Active Voice

I wash the dishes everyday.

The active tells what people or things do.

Passive Voice

The dishes are washed everyday.

The passive tells what happens to people or things. The subject is not always expressed.
